Woohoo! Thanks for nabbing and putting up the Total Film article. Too bad the only mention of Richard is that Thorin needs lifts in his shoes to be the ‘tallest’ dwarf.😉 LOL Good to hear too a bit about the tone of the movies; so Part I more fairytale like before getting heavier in Part 2, setting the stage for LOTR. Can’t wait to see it!! Was wondering how they would translate the different tone of TH into these films while ensuring continuity with LOTR.
I love the irony of Richard not being quite tall enough for the role. ROFL! I can’t wait to see the “politically incorrect” dwarves stomping all around Rivendell! Poor Bilbo, you can really see how uncomfortable he must feel surrounded by nothing but disgruntled dwarves all day.

Did I read correctly that RA has lifts in his shoes?? To play a character several feet smaller than he is in real life! Really? That is just amazing.
Having read The Hobbit I believe there’s much that can be enhanced in the story to make a film that both children and adults will love, and I’m sure Peter Jackson will do so the right way and the fact that he sees the dwarves as central to the story is just great. So much to look forward to.

Thanks, that was an awesome article. Finally some new official images from the movie. My favourite one was Bilbo sitting alone with all the dwarves taking a nap. Love the look of that still. It seems to be in Mirkwood, the dwarves are exhausted and just crashing at the first best spot, but Bilbo the hero of the story can´t rest.
I start to see what Peter Jackson meant with keeping the same spirit of LOTR but at the same time creating its own unique look and I hope that the visuals in the finished film will be much more fairy tale looking than LOTR which most of the time looked like an historical epic with some fantastical creatures in it.
I can´t wait to see what the wargs, spiders and trolls will look like, but I hope at the same time that Jackson keeps them a secret untill the very end. I want to see them in all their glory first day ín the theatre.
The colors in that shot of Bilbo and the sleeping dwarves is interesting. I’m wondering if that is the uncorrected coloring of the set, or if that is really going to come across on film. It looks like a painting to me.
Definitely wondering about the wargs. I was not a fan of the warg design in LOTR, so I would not mind a reworking.

I don’t know why so many people see “The Hobbit” as a child’s fairy tale. It’s not: the story, the discovery of the One Ring and the reconciliation of the peoples of the West, forms the literary bridge between “The Silmarillion” and “LotR.” Without these two critical elements, Tolkien’s epic saga would be little more than a collection of random tales.
Interesting points! It has been far too long since I’ve read the Silmarillion, so I can’t comment on that part.
But Tolkien originally intended the story for his children, and while there is drama even in the early chapters, it is not until later chapters that it begins to grow into something that challenges a more mature reader (and to be fair, Tolkien did not have the full tale of the One Ring in mind when he wrote the Hobbit initially). To me it feels like it was a children’s story that was retrofitted to be epic.
The tone is not like that of a fairy tale, but isn’t as deep as Tolkien’s other works. Part of my problem is trying to reconcile the two styles. I like to think it is because we are getting it mostly from Bilbo’s perspective, so it is being filtered through a quirky hobbit’s eye view. It lacks description in places the reader would really like to hear more. But Bilbo may not have found certain things important enough to record later, because he was focused on what mattered more to hobbits. If the same story was told by Gandalf, it would have sounded different. The tiny bit we get of this is in the “Quest of Erebor”, where Gandalf tells the story of how he and Thorin first met. The tone is more in keeping with LOTR.
