This is really amazing. Though there was no traitors among Thorin’s friends. But religious aspect was very important for Tolkien and it runs through all his books.

True, dwarves are the last beings to have a Judas figure, but it would sure add to the complexity of the movie plot were we to discover that Gloin was secretly in league with Bolg! :)

Wow I love it! No doubt Tolkien already had already seen (or deliberately created) these parallels as he was a Catholic himself. :)

I’m telling you, watch out for that Gloin! :)

That’s a really incredibly done picture… though I have to admit when I saw the title of this, all I could think of was the Tolkien quote: “I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations.” It made me giggle. I wonder what he would say if he could see that…

I know there are essays on the apparent presence of religious allegory in lotr, despite what Tolkien said, but I have not yet read any on The Hobbit. Maybe this will inspire someone to go dig for it.

Definitely religious allegory behind the film. The fact alone that the subtitle is extremely similar to the “abomination of desolation” and Smaug refers to himself as fire/death/etc…
The whole ‘darkness’ rising that is the superseding theme of the series has the obvious prophetic biblical undertones.
The song at the end of the film “I see fire” has lyrics and a tone that captures you. Looking into the lyrics further, they seem to be from the perspective of those who during the end of days flee into the mountains for safety, looking out and watching what is unfolding.
Knowing these passages, it’s hard not to see the film(s) in a completely new light.
Everything is an allegory with religious undertones, whether the author is aware of it or not. We already know this Author was- which only make the story that much more intriguing.
