The Hobbit Panel at Comic-con has wrapped and it sounds like it was a huge success! I’m sure we will be innundated with reactions very shortly! Here is a quote from TORn’s first teaser summary:
Thorin addresses the dwarves, “Rumors have begun to spread… the dragon Smaug has not been seen in years, perhaps the vast wealth of our people lie unprotected… Perhaps we take this chance to take back Erebor!”
Just a brief note to share this 8 minute interview with those who missed it. Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens, Andy Serkis, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, and Martin Freeman answered a few questions about the film. Richard talks about Thorin’s need for revenge on Azog and Smaug, and his fluctuating relationships with Gandalf and Bilbo.
The video might become available on the EW site, but you can watch it right now thanks to richardarmitagecentral.co.uk (RA fans outdo everyone when it comes to sharing the goods as quick as possible!)
Thanks to Eruthurin of TORn, we don’t even have to squint to the see the details on this version of the EW.com “Scroll”! It’s 8871×1195 pixels. Yowza!
When it rains, it pours! Here are two exclusive statues making their debut at Comic-con:
Fans of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey get another exclusive at this years Comic-Con. Gentle Giant is adding one more collectible to their plethora of exclusives by announcing today that Thorin Oakenshield will be joining the collectibles you can buy later this week. This bust has been digitally scanned to ensure the likeness of Richard Armitage, his outfit, and weapons are all film accurate. Each of these busts has also been hand painted to insure the highest quality collectible. Thorin can be purchased at Gentle Giants booth #3513 for $70 and online sales start during Preview Night at 6pm PST. So those of you in San Diego, be sure to act fast as Thorin has an edition size of only 500 pieces world wide.
And from Wetanz.com comes this:
A Touch of Middle-earth will be on display at the Weta Booth #3513B at San Diego Comic-Con on 11-15 July
Weta is excited to offer two exclusive items for sale at Comic-Con International: San Diego:
Thorin Oakenshield – with shield*
The first in a range of 1:6 scale polystone statues.
US$249 – Limit 2 per person
This limited edition collection will have a run of 700 pieces, 500 of which will be available for purchase at San Diego Comic-Con. (The remaining 200 statues will be reserved for sale in October at the Weta Cave in New Zealand and at Ring*Con in Germany.)
*Note there will be a separate version, without shield, available at www.wetaNZ.com in October 2012
Update 7/11/12: A note on the Weta forums explains why you can’t yet see the shield, even though it is on this statue:
In addition, I confirm the shield is part of the exclusive collectible. It is worn under Thorin’s cloak on his left side. We are not allowed to offer any further pics at this stage, but he will be on display at Comic Con, so you will no doubt see fan pics soon.
Needless to say, I can’t get over how young Thorin is looking here. Is it just the lighting, or is this from a flashback? Definitely a Thorin Glamour Shot if ever there were one :-) We get a great view of the pommel of his original sword here too. You know, the one he has before upgrading to Orcrist.
Unending gratitude goes to JasRangoon for being one of the first to scan the latest issue of EW (July 13/ #1215) for the rest of us non-subscribers. It should be on newsstands this Friday. And, if anyone happens to have an iPad, and an EW subscription, you can access more content on the website at ew.com/allaccess
While there are quotes with Ian McKellen, Peter Jackson, Richard Armitage, and Martin Freeman, I think I appreciate the little rundown of dwarf personalities on the second to last page most of all! Some were as expected, but some are more surprising!
